The Grand Unified Theory of Everything
for reed quintet and 4.1 interactive electronics

The Grand Unified Theory of Everything is titled after two theoretical concepts in physics that seek to find unity in seemingly disparate elements. As someone who is not scientist, seeking to make sense of a chaotic universe through a unified theory seems like a fool’s errand, yet an attractive one. Throughout history, the human race has sought to explain the world around them through science, philosophy, mysticism, and religion. The Grand Unified Theory of Everything incorporates all of these practices and belief systems through audio of scientists and philosophers.
Musically, the quintet comes in and out of unity through aleatory. In addition, the interactive electronics for the work respond with randomized sound processing and sound files, allowing the work to explore how chaos can become unity, and how unity can devolve into chaos.
The Grand Unified Theory of Everything was written for Splinter Reeds through The Walden School Faculty Commission.
