Sinfony
for chamber orchestra
Before the symphonies of Haydn, the term “sinfonia” was used for a variety of musical works, including those incorporating instruments and voices. During the Baroque period, it became synonymous with what we would now call an “overture” to an opera or oratorio.
Sinfony takes its inspiration from the French overtures of Georg Frederic Handel, particularly that which opens his Messiah. It was commissioned by The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia as a part of their 2023-2025 composer residency program.
